Cool cities for and by their users: integrating soft, green and grey strategies to promote citizens’ health in a sustainable environment

Amid a global climate crisis, more frequent and intense heat waves alter people's quality of life and increase morbidity and mortality. Cities are particularly vulnerable to heat because they concentrate people, including many in situations of individual, social and/or environmental fragility, and because the urban fabric, structure, cover and metabolism alter the thermal environment, which generally exacerbates heat stress. Creating cities that sustainably and effectively address the challenge of overheating is thus of utmost importance.

Adaptative Optics (AO) requires fast and precise wavefront control using deformable optical surface (DM) with a large number of actuators. Current commercial DM technologies are efficient but still suffer from limitations in their temporal bandwidth, dynamical range, size, number of actuators, fragility/fatigue, and non-linear effects that need to be overcome for future instruments. Moreover, these DMs have unperfect shape at rest and are costly. We aim to develop a new hybrid high-speed, lightweight, large and low-cost deformable-mirror technology.

Textile materials have two essential characteristics: one is technical, resulting from the choice of fibers and their assembly into fabrics, the second is aesthetic, linked to the material and its finishing. The value of a textile object is associated with both technical and aesthetics, it is linked to actual wear and tear completed with the attachment of the consumer. The end of life of these textiles can occur because they are worn and damaged or because they are not liked anymore or considered outdated.

With proven effects on the environment and health, synthetic polymer microparticles usually called microplastics (MPs) can accumulate in the food chain, release toxic substances or serve as vectors for other contaminants and pathogens. Urban areas are major sources and pathways for the transfer of MPs to water bodies. Their transfer to the natural environment involves complex transport processes through runoff and stormwater management systems.

In prokaryotes, the frequency of amino acids in proteomes is strongly correlated with the optimal growth temperature (OGT), but the associated substitutional patterns and their dynamics remain poorly understood. The ThermAdapt project addresses these two important issues through an original approach combining genomics, ancestral sequence reconstructions, structural modeling, experimental biology, and persistent homology. The MAMUT project aims at designing an open platform for solving recurrent and dynamic vehicle routing problems in urban environments. In order to address these urban transportation problems, we propose to combine operations research (OR) and artificial intelligence (AI). OR is able to propose fast and efficient resolution methods but these methods are often problem-specific and they do not take advantage of past solutions. AI, and especially machine learning, helps to define good solutions through the training of large historical data.

The GreeenLocal3D project focuses on models and experiments to facilitate the short circuit recycling of post-consumer plastic waste to be recovered and enhanced by additive manufacturing (AM) processes. In a new "distributed recycling" paradigm, this process must be accomplished by affordable and flexible technologies that cover a limited geographical area to form the basic unit of a "smart recycling network". More specifically, the objective is to study the possibility through AM to revalorize previously unsorted and/or unrecycled types of plastics.
