INSA LYON

The HYperStock project aims at consolidating the French scientific leadership in the field of storage and distribution of hydrogen under high pressure. This is an essential element of the hydrogen value chain on which the research and innovation effort must focus, specifically with an aim at decarbonizing heavy transportation mobility, in order to build up the green and autonomous hydrogen economy of tomorrow.

To reduce the carbon footprint of compressed hydrogen transportation and on-board storage, a primary focus must be put on the materials, taking their synthesis, processing, lifetime and recyclability into account. The challenge in terms of materials is then considerable. At the IMP lab of INSA Lyon, we shall deal with non-metallic materials, which include elastomers, thermosets and thermoplastics as well as structural composites. More specifically, in the present project, we will focus on vessel liners (internal shells). By characterizing the mecanical, physico-chemical and structural properties of the material along its lifetime, we will identify the damage mechanisms which degrade the material properties and eventually cause its final rupture. Based on this study, we shall be able to validate potential new materials for the new generation of hydrogen high pressure containers.
