Development of new materials for bipolar plates dedicated to hydrogen electromobility
Coordinateur:

Responsable INSA:
Bernard NORMAND
The introduction of fuel cells for surface vehicles requires a review of stack concepts to make them lighter, more compact and more durable. These objectives require, among other things, the development of new materials dedicated to the bipolar plate. The MATEIS (Materials: Engineering and Science) laboratory has been asked to work on the conceptualisation and performance evaluation of these new materials. To do this, it is using its expertise in surface engineering, corrosion science and electrochemical measurement.

The objective of the BeFriend project consists in finding the best test conditions and MoS2 nanoparticles properties (size, morphology, structure, defectness, chemistry) aimed at optimizing their tribological performances.
The effect of the environment (resistance to oxidation) on the lubricating properties of the nanoparticles will be addressed. Friction tests in controlled environment (T°C, oxygen pressure) combined with in situ characterization will be carried out

Wide-Bandgap semiconductors such as silicon carbides (SiC) or Gallium Nitrides (GaN) are particularly interested in power electronic. Indeed Wide-bandgap semiconductors permit devices to operate at much higher voltages, frequencies and temperatures than conventional semiconductor materials like silicon. They will be a foundational technology in new electrical grid and alternative energy devices.

The FASTCURE2 project deals with the development of innovative thermosets combined with carbon fibers as prepregs for high pressure (700 bars) hydrogen storage tanks. Such Type IV H2 tanks are essential components for the development of hydrogen economy, i.e. for being combined with fuel cells and for stationary applications.
