TRANSport et interactions des microPLASTics dans les déversoirs d'orage des eaux urbaines et développement de solutions de remédiation

Rémy BAYARD
With proven effects on the environment and health, synthetic polymer microparticles usually called microplastics (MPs) can accumulate in the food chain, release toxic substances or serve as vectors for other contaminants and pathogens. Urban areas are major sources and pathways for the transfer of MPs to water bodies. Their transfer to the natural environment involves complex transport processes through runoff and stormwater management systems.

Gislain LIPEME-KOUYI
The overall goal of MULTISOURCE is to, together with local, national, and international stakeholders, demonstrate a variety of Enhanced Natural Treatment Solutions (ENTS) treating a wide range of urban waters and to develop innovative tools, methods, and business models that support citywide planning and long-term operations and maintenance of nature-based solutions for water treatment, storage, and reuse in urban areas worldwide.
This project has received funding from the European Union’s Horizon 2020 research and innovation programme under grant agreement N° 101003527.

Waste-to-energy (WtE) is one of the leading technologies for mixed municipal solid waste (MSW) treatment in Europe. WtE plants treat in Europe nearly 80 million tonnes of MSW per year and produce approximately 20 million tonnes of incineration bottom ash (IBA). The recovery of ferrous and non-ferrous metals from larger particles over 2-4 mm is common practice in many European countries.

TELESPHORE is devoted to the evaluation of transfers of and processes (decay, infiltration, adsorption, etc.) related to pharmaceutical residues and biocides from both sludge from wastewater treatment plants and manure spread on fields as fertilizers for agriculture. The main goal is to evaluate the possible contamination by pharmaceuticals and biocides of soils and groundwater due to sludge and manure spreading for fertilizing. The work will combine in situ (lysimeters) and lab (column pilots) experiments. Telesphore is part of the global project RISMEAU.

The production of plastics increased from 1.5 million tonnes in 1935 to 335 million in 2016. Most of the plastic products consumed in Europe are collected for processing and, as far as possible, for material recycling or energy recycling (combustion and pyro-gasification). However, the collection of plastic residues is not total. Indeed, many plastic products at the end of use escape the treatment and recovery channels and are found, voluntarily or involuntarily, in the various compartments of the biosphere, including the final outlet, the ocean.
