Biomechanical behavior of carotid atherosclerosis: A numerical approach

Atherosclerosis is a disease that affects the vascular system. It is manifested by the formation of an atheroma plaque at the intimal layer of arterial tissue causing stiffening of the arterial wall. The majority of cardiovascular deaths in Europe are a consequence of this pathology.The process of plaque formation is very long and reinforced by the presence of substances such as nicotine or LDL cholesterol in the blood. In general, atherosclerosis is an asymptomatic disease, this makes its diagnosis difficult in the early stages. Indeed, the diagnosis is made following a disconfort or medical emergency using medical imaging tools such as MRI or Echo-Doppler.For all the reasons mentioned above, this pathology continues to arise the curiosity of the scientific community in order to understand the phenomena that lead to the occurrence and development of this disease as well as to improve diagnosis and the treatment. In this sense, our project consists of studying the mechanical phenomena that accompany the presence of plaque at the level of the carotid bifurcation, a frequent site of atheroma formation. In order to do this, we evaluate the behavior of the fluid and the arterial structure by the finite volume and finite element methods. First, we study the dynamics of blood for simplified and real models with and without plaque. Then we are interested in the effect of wall deformation on hemodynamics. Finally, we study the vibratory response of the arterial structure in order to verify the effect the presence of plaque on carotid deformation.
