Status of the PhD Students

The different status categories of PhD students

There are 3 main categories of status for PhD students:

  • Student receiving a stipend from the public sector.
  • Student receiving a stipend from the private sector, working for a company, with a research contract between the company and the laboratory where the research is carried out. The remuneration received by the PhD student may be provided for in the contract and/or be the subject of a CIFRE (French Ministry of Research Training in Industry) Agreement.
  • Student on a PhD scholarship (from a foreign government, for example).

All PhD students enrolled at INSA Lyon must provide proof of the funding necessary to undertake their PhD, or of their own resources if they hold unrelated salaried employment.
