LaMCoS: Jean Mandel Prize

awarded to Julien Réthoré, researcher on the MSE team at LaMCoS.

Wednesday August 31, 2011, Julien Réthoré, researcher on the MSE1 team at LaMCoS (INSA - CNRS UMR5259) received the Jean Mandel Prize.

This prize was designed to promote scientific research in the areas of solid mechanics or mechanics and material rheology. It is awarded to a young researcher or team of young researchers authoring an original theoretical or experimental work in this area for Accreditation to direct research or for an original application of state of the art Engineering results.

A look at the career of Julien Réthoré

Julien Réthoré started his career as a researcher with a thesis directed by Prof. Alain Combescure on the experimental and digital study of dynamic fissure propagation. Building on these original digital skills, he conducted a first post-doc on modeling propagation and discontinuities in porous environments together with Prof. R. de Borst (TU Delft, Netherlands). Upon returning to France in 2006, he conducted a second post-doc at the LMT Cachan with F. Hild and S. Roux, a post-doctorate study on developing correlation techniques for digital images suitable for studying discontinuities.

Now he is continuing his work on discontinuities in various contexts (electro-chemistry, thermo-mechanics, three dimensional stresses) and is also working on using cutting-edge digital techniques (such as NURBS) to identify laws of behavior. What makes Julien Réthoré's profile and his research work original is a harmonious combination of refined experimental techniques and highly advanced digital methods (e.g. X-FEM, NURBS) for solid and structural mechanics.

La carrière de Jean Mandel (1907-1982)
Ingénieur des Mines, il a été notamment Professeur à l’Ecole polytechnique et à l’Ecole des Mines de Paris et a fondé le Laboratoire de Mécanique des Solides à l’Ecole polytechnique. Théoricien de la mécanique des solides, il se souciait également des applications. Il a apporté des contributions majeures et qui font toujours référence à la mécanique des roches et des sols tout autant que des métaux, des polymères ou des composites.
