PhD – Track: a new mode of international collaboration

At the end of December 2011, the "PhD-Track" project managed by INSA Lyon (IT Department – LIRIS Laboratory) and the University of Passau (in the Southern Bavaria) was retained by the Franco-German University (UFA). As such, it will benefit from substantial funding. This pilot programme, which will begin in September 2012, will enable students to follow an inter-cultural study path with a strong R&D focus as part of an integrated Franco-German "Master's + Doctorate" curriculum.

A unique double (dual) diploma

his pilot programme was created with a view to attracting students from INSA Lyon and Passau interested in research. It is an original concept since it places students in a research and innovation environment as early as the engineer training cycle. The objective is to encourage students to pursue this path after obtaining a dual diploma (INSA Engineer (IT Department) / Master's Degree from Passau IT and Mathematics Faculty) within the framework of a thesis co-tutored by INSA and Passau within the Multimedia Distributed and Pervasive Secure Systems (MDPS) doctoral college.

Created in 2007 by INSA Lyon and the University of Passau with the support of the Franco-German University, and extended to the University of Milan in 2010, the MDPS doctoral college proposes a structured international programme in doctoral training. Bringing together more than 25 researchers and doctoral students from fifteen countries working on a jointly defined scientific project, the MDPS doctoral college provides a long-term structure for scientific collaboration which is particularly adapted to conducting co-tutored theses in the field of multimedia distributed and secure information systems.

A strong R&D component

The PHD-Track programme was designed with a strong integrated training and research mix. As of the fourth year of the engineering degree course, this translates into specific research-oriented projects conducted by engineering students in association with doctoral students from the doctoral college, student participation in research workshops run by the MDPS doctoral college and an end-of-study internship in research.

Start in September 2012

The first "IT engineering/Master's Passau" dual diploma class will begin in September 2012 in the fourth year of the IT engineering programme, with diplomas awarded at the start of 2015 (during the transition phase, this programme will also be open to 5th year IT students who will qualify for the diploma in 2014.) The first full PhD-Tracks (Master's + Doctorate) will obtain their diplomas in 2017. At the end of this training, they will work in professions linked to R&D and innovation, in companies or university research laboratories.

Note: the next 6-monthly workshop of the MDPS doctoral college
will take place in Lyon from 11 to 15 June 2012.
