New African perspectives
A delegation from 2iE at INSA Lyon
On 28 and 29 February 2012, INSA Lyon welcomed a delegation from 2iE, International Institute for Water and Environmental Engineering, led by Paul Giniès, the Director General, and accompanied by Georges Haddad, the Director of Education Research and Foresight at UNESCO.
2iE is an inter-state establishment based in Burkina Faso which, since 2009, has been awarding an engineering diploma recognised by the CTI (Commission des Titres d’Ingénieur) and accredited by EUR-ACE, in the fields of hydraulics, energy, environment and civil engineering. The aim of these working days was to define partnership actions to be conducted together, with Lyon-based partners (including ENTPE and ENS), regional Rhône-Alpes partners (G INP, ENSAG), national-level partners (the INSA Group and ENGEES) and even European partners (with the presence of EPFL).
The INSA Group signed a framework agreement in June 2011 with 2iE. INSA Rouen is already actively involved; the school regularly sends students on internships and receives research professors.
A conference entitled "L’Afrique forme ses élites" (Africa trains its elite students), organised by the University of Lyon with the support of the Greater Lyon Council, was given by Paul Giniès and Georges Haddad, in front of a hundred participants. The speakers provided a new insight into higher education in Africa, and notably concerning the training of engineers. "The 21st century will be that of the engineer, also in Africa," asserted Georges Haddad.
Academic exchanges, teacher training and the development of research activities offer new partnership possibilities with 2iE.
