INSA Lyon: a socially responsible organisation
Positioned from its very beginning as a "social elevator", the school considers diversity as a major opportunity for enriching education, know-how and inter-personal skills.
Supporting students throughout their education: a firm strategy at INSA Lyon.
Favouring equal opportunities:
a founding creed since the creation of the school in 1957
Having always aimed to combine social equality and success, in 2009, INSA Lyon decided to integrate the multi-disciplinary expertise of a Centre for Diversity and Success.
This “laboratory of excellence” houses a research team at the crossroads between human sciences and engineering. The centre aims to innovate in five ways:
- develop vocations and incite ambition;
- broaden recruitment and support social openness;
- favour personal development;
- guarantee training quality throughout the study period;
- promote professional integration with the support of companies and local authorities.

- Signing of partnership agreements with high schools in ZEP (Priority Education Zones) as early as 2005, |
Promote scientific education in underprivileged areas, |
- Creation of “summer school”: support for young “merit pupils” to prepare the exams for the Grandes Ecoles in schools in sensitive areas or in rural areas, - Setting up of regular tutorials in the 1st cycle, - Attribution of financial aid throughout their education at INSA Lyon. |
Promoting the engineering profession and sciences among women…
1 INSA student out of 3 is a female engineering student
1/3 of INSA Lyon's engineering students are girls, i.e. 8% higher than the national average in Grandes Ecoles. This is not just by chance... but due to our efforts
to increase awareness, with the support of qualified partners: for example, the association Win France, a network of women working in the field of nuclear science and its applications (energy, space, medicine, art, biology) or the educational programme Companieros which brings female students and major companies together regarding the subject of “engineering women”.
Integration of persons with a disability: INSA Lyon is a leader
At INSA Lyon, the hiring, support and professional integration of persons with a disability is something that involves all staff, teachers and students.
In 2008, the school allocated a budget of 560 k€ to adapt the layout of the buildings and provide educational support.
The school's internet and intranet sites fulfil the accessibility standards W3C / WAI (World Wide Web Consortium / Web Accessibility Initiative), thus fully complying with French legislation for public premises.
A sustainable employment strategy
For persons with disabilities, INSA Lyon has implemented a strategy to preserve employment: wherever possible, work stations are made accessible and training is proposed.
Admissions: different paths
Admissions into the first year are the perfect example of a school that is open to differences: equal opportunity recruitment based on application files, which allows the best secondary school pupils to be admitted from whatever school they attended, a section that is accessible to Baccalaureate students STI-STL (Industrial Science and Technology), specific aid for grant students, programmes such as “passport for interviews” with schools in underprivileged zones, a major focus on international issues, with the international sections.
INSA Lyon also undertakes to diversify admissions into the 3rd year: recruitment is open to students with other educational backgrounds from French or international higher education establishments.
