INSA Lyon cares about its ecological imprint
Sustainable Development (SD)
Tangible solutions proposed by researchers concerning protection of the environment, integration of corporate social responsibility concepts into the education programme, strong staff and student involvement to increase the awareness of different populations on campus and promote responsible actions… INSA Lyon has just passed its second renewal audit for ISO 14 001.
This result is the fruit of continuous, joint work and shows the exemplary standards set by INSA Lyon. It also highlights the catalysing role played by our sustainable development ambassadors, a unique and original network launched by the student association Objectif 21 and then extended to the staff, in order to spread and reinforce actions designed to increase awareness and preventive measures within the establishment.
Results of the environmental management system
ISO 14001 Certification on part of the campus (obtained in 2004 and renewed in 2007)
Notable results are: .
- Reduction, by 4 times, in the consumption of water in one building, (35,000 m3 of water saved per year),
- Energy audit of the INSA buildings and identification of the biggest “energy eaters”,
- Production of solar electricity using panels on the roof of the energy and environmental engineering department,
- Setting up of waste management programme (paper – cardboard, batteries, electronic equipment waste), staff and student awareness of waste reduction at source,
- Removal of equipment containing mercury in students' practical assignments.
Increasing awareness of all stakeholders through original and recurrent initiatives
Operation “Clean Campus”
Event aimed at increasing awareness of students and companies regarding recycling. More than 300 kg were collected during the 2008 annual “big-cleaning” day.
Designing and promoting tools to fight against climate change
In conjunction with several associations or study offices (ADEME, the Club for Education, Energy and Environment Control, “Avenir Climatique Manicore”), the students and teachers at INSA Lyon have been trained to implement the BILAN CARBONE™ (Carbon Review).
This has led to the implementation of a personal online BILAN CARBONE™ calculator accessible at www.bilancarbonepersonnel.org.
Transport: using and highlighting “clean” vehicles for professionals
Since 2006 INSA Lyon has been a pilot site for the mass marketing in France of utility vehicles run on a dual power natural gas/petrol system limiting the emission of particles that are dangerous for our health (-24% of CO2) and reducing by 80 % the nitrogen oxides that threaten the ozone layer.
Creation of a “PCT”: Pole of Thematic Competence in Sustainable Development
INSA Lyon is in the process of setting up a new division whose objective is to define and coordinate the establishment's overall policy in terms of sustainable development and to support related actions.
The Greater Lyon Cleantech Project on the LyonTech campus
INSA Lyon has a structured and efficient environment for asserting itself as a centre of excellence in eco-innovations. It is part of “Lyon, Cité Campus” (one of the 12 campus plans with a national certification) which has placed cleantech at the heart of its strategic development.
For information, “cleantechs”, or eco-technologies, enable progress in important sectors for the future: solar energy, fuel cells, thermal insulation, clean motorisation…
Green IT, not just a trendy concept, but a pillar of our strategic development
Since 2005, the Information Systems department at INSA Lyon has run a waste collection programme for “D3E” waste (Déchets d'Equipements Electriques et Electronique [Electronic, Electrical Equipment Waste]) and carries out two annual collections that, to date, have removed around 70 tonnes of electronic equipment waste.
The “Soyons Durables” (Let's be Sustainable) competition
Set up in 2009, this competition is open to and students and staff at INSA Lyon. The goal is to find an idea to implement on the INSA Lyon campus that will improve day-to-day operations.
In 2009, the winning project saw the creation of alternative meals in the INSA restaurant so as to reduce the environmental impact linked to food (mainly due to the over-consumption of meat).
In 2010, the recycling plant project for student residences took first prize.
