Final results of the IGEM 2012 competition

The "Biofilm Killer" project misses the podium

In 2012, INSA Lyon entered the Collegiate division of iGEM. Of the 192 teams which competed, only 72 were selected to take part in the World Championship (with 18 European teams, including INSA Lyon).

The LYON-INSA team comprised 15 people who overcame the logistical problems caused by Hurricane Sandy and raised the necessary funds to come and promote its "Biofilm Killer" project at the World Championship Jamboree from 2 to 5 November 2012 at MIT (Boston - Cambridge, MA).

The excellence of the European teams, recognised in Amsterdam, led to a stunning success: the four finalist teams are from the great synthetic biology institutes of the Old Continent!

Winners: 1) Groningen (Netherlands), 2) Slovenia, 3) Paris-Bettencourt, 4) LMU Munich

Prizes area difficult target under these conditions for a young teams like LYON-INSA, but we still need to underline the fact that Berkeley, Cambridge, Yale and MIT did not do any better!
Furthermore, the "Biofilm Killer” project aroused a great deal of interest and was much encouraged. Not to mention the invaluable experience acquired during the contest!

The LYON-INSA team did not leave empty-handed, since they won the "Best prize for overcoming adversity" awarded by sponsor iGEM OSLI (Oil Sand Leadership Initiative).

In addition, iGEM this year inaugurated a new division named ''iGEM Entrepreneurship Competition" (objective: fostering the development of a new industry where Synthetic Biology is the underlying technological platform).
Only 9 teams took part in this first competition. Unfortunately, an INSA-Lyon team of four students from the Entrepreneurial Engineer section (GI, GMC, GMD, TC) was forced to pull out due to organisational difficulties.

Winner: Alberta (Canada)
