- as part of a bilateral agreement or an Erasmus agreement with their university
- or as part of a specific program (ISEP, CREPUQ, GE3, ORA,
Brafitec, Mexfitec …)
- in the absence of an agreement, as a visiting student. Even if the home university has not signed a bilateral agreement with INSA Lyon, it is quite possible to come and study for a semester or an academic year. In such a case, the student will have a "visiting student" status. This means tuition fees remain the responsibility of the student (approximately 600 Euros in 2012-2013). The application procedure is identical.

Exchange student recruitment takes place twice a year:

- from March 1 to April 30 for the first semester (September-January) or for the whole year (September-June)
- from September 1 to October 15 for the second semester (February-June)
