Engineering sciences

at the heart of a centre for research and innovation

INSA Lyon is one of the university sites in France which brings together the highest concentration of expertise and actors in high technology.
This is an ideal situation given its culture and attachment to a multidisciplinary approach to research.
Organised around 6 poles of competence, INSA Lyon is both a producer and diffuser of specialised knowledge and innovative solutions firmly aimed at businesses.

Research at the service of society’s major challenges

INSA Lyon is characterised by a dynamic policy of collaborating with businesses to work on the major issues facing tomorrow’s society.

6 poles of competence

On one of the largest higher education and research sites in France, more than 500 researchers work in 21 laboratories organised into 6 poles of competence.

  • Chemistry-Biology-Health
  • Energy-Environment-Sustainable Urbanisation
  • Materials
  • Mechanics
  • Micro-Nano Electronic Technologies
  • Information Technology Sciences

These 6 INSA Lyon centres of excellence are encouraged to work beyond the borders of their disciplines and are supported by the naturally cross-disciplinary Mathematics Unit.

Pooled laboratories

The INSA Lyon laboratories’ research activities are part of the resources pooled with the main research and higher education bodies of the Université de Lyon.

Research partnerships

Firmly anchored in the needs of the socio-economic world both within the context of regional competitiveness clusters and collaborative European projects, our laboratories’ activities are primarily funded
through partnerships: 70% from public funding and over 30% from industrial contracts.
