CLYM: a new electron microscope unique in France...

...for the scientific community of Lyon

The Lyon Microscopy Centre (CLYM) recently acquired a new Environmental Transmission Electron Microscope (ETEM). Delivered on 19 December 2012, it is now in the process of installation in premises specially built for the purpose behind the IRCELYON laboratory on the LyonTech La Doua Campus.

This equipment possesses specifications which today make it a unique instrument in France. Fitted with an optical corrector giving a resolution of 0.1 nm (1 Angström) on High Resolution, it has a differential vacuum system for the specimen carrier, which allows gas to be injected while maintaining the remainder of the column at a very high vacuum. This “environmental” mode was already available on the Controlled Pressure Scanning Electron Microscope (ESEM) acquired by CLYM in 2003 and installed in the MATEIS laboratory on CLYM INSA site. Whereas the ESEM allowed the observation of hydrated objects through the ability to maintain a liquid state in a highly degraded vacuum cooled to a few degrees Celsius, the ETEM would in contrast be dedicated to observing physical-chemical reactions under low gas pressure and at high temperature (approximately 1000°C), but at atomic resolution. The reactivity of nanoparticles, the evolution of catalysers, in situ precipitation or the ageing of materials under environmental conditions are just a few of the research subjects which are now open to partner laboratories.

CLYM thus adds to its instrument base, which already includes the ESEM, an analytical field emission microscope, an atomic force microscope (AFM)  and the only dual-column Focused Ion Beam microscope in the Lyon area. This FIB and the new ETEM are the equipments of a project funded in the framework of CPER 2007-2013 by the Rhône-Alpes Region, Greater Lyon, the Ministry and CNRS.
