Classical First Cycle
The First Cycle is the common core of basic training that the student follows immediately after the baccalaureate (A-levels). Over a period of two years, it takes the student from the status of high-school pupil to that of a future INSA engineer.
It takes in about 900 students in first year. Each student receives a general education, spread over the two years of the First Cycle, in key areas such as Mathematics and Computer Science, Physics, Chemistry and Physical Chemistry, Mechanics, Construction, Manufacturing and Human Sciences.

The classes
They present the methods and ideas inherent to the subject; this study is needed to acquire the basic knowledge illustrated in the tutorials. Personal work broadens the students’ knowledge and allows them, through tutorials, to reach a proficient level of analysis and summary skills.
Practical assignments
They aim to familiarise students with the latest skills and ideas in the field of measures and enable them to fully integrate and digest specific know-how that they can then use to solve a particular problem. This teaching method represents a considerable number of hours (30% of teaching) and prepares students for the engineering cycle.
Other lessons
Human sciences (Culture, communication and language) as well as physical education and sports complement the aforementioned classes by developing the inter-personal skills of the future engineers.
Student attendance is compulsory for all types of classes.
The ‘worker’ internship
This is mandatory, for at least four weeks. It takes place during the summer holidays, between the first and second year.
