Civil Engineering and Urban Planning (GCU)

Yearly, more than 100 students graduate from the Civil Engineering and Urban Planning Department to fulfill the market requirements. The fields covered by the Department are buildings, civil engineering and urban planning.

Education

An engineer graduating from Civil Engineering and Urban Planning Department of INSA Lyon acquires competences in various fields.

During their education, the students are trained to work autonomously and in networks. The variety of the curricula ensures the adaptability and the evolution of the future engineer.

3rd and 4th years – The basics at work

The first two years are devoted to acquiring scientific and technical knowledge in 7 different fields of applied sciences (structural dynamics, material sciences, geotechnics , building physics, etc.) It is supplemented by general scientific tools (mathematics, computer science) and by social sciences.
The project-based teaching, complemented by the teaching of applied sciences, is introduced progressively. A particular importance is given to foreign languages (two foreign languages are taught) and communication.

5th year – Specialization

The last year allows the student to mature his or her professional project with:

Professional projects
The project-based training is done in three important branches of the profession:
- Urban Development and Renovation: for organizing and producing urban space,
- Building, environment, modern conveniences: designing, building and managing environment-friendly real-estate complexes,
- Infrastructures and structures: designing and building major road infrastructures and structures.

The teaching method is based on design studios tutored by professionals coming mainly from the industry. Specialized courses give the knowledge necessary conduct the project.

R&D Project

This project is conducted in one of the University laboratories. The subject of the R&D project is applied research: the student is asked to analyze and solve a given problem. This project can be carried out in collaboration with industrial companies or in collaboration with other research laboratories from France or from abroad.

Optional courses

The students of the Civil Engineering and Urban Planning Department can choose between a dozen of optional courses proposed by INSA Lyon. Out of these, four are proposed by the Department:
- Risk Management
- Spatial Planning
- Sustainable Cities
- Wood and forest (with GEN department)

Industrial internships

Two industrial internships are required:
- 8 weeks minimum between the 3rd and the 4th year: discover of the profession
- 14 weeks minimum between the 4th and the 5th year: acting as an engineer

International outlook

In addition to learning foreign languages, every student in our Department has the opportunity to :
- be an exchange student for one year in the 4th or 5th year of studies in a foreign university (about 40 students are admitted)
- work in abroad industrial company and/or research laboratory.
- A special partnership gives access to Double Diploma INSA CE&UP Department and Trinity College of Dublin (TCD), INSA CE&UP Department and Universitat Politecnica de Catalunya (UPC), INSA CE&UP Department and Ecole de Technologie Supérieure in Montréal (ETS), INSA CE&UP Department and Civil Engineering Department of Tonji University (in progress).

Special programs and master:

- Engineer – Architect: this program is proposed to students accepted in the 3rd year of the Civil Engineering and Urban Planning Department of INSA Lyon which gives access to a diploma in both Architecture and Engineering via a special curriculum.
- Architect – Engineer: this program is proposed to the students of the National School of Architecture of Lyon.
- Master: three masters are proposed: Mechanical, Energy, Acoustic and Civil Engineering (MEGA), Cities and Societies,(VS) Industrial and Urban Environment Sciences (SEIU).
- Sport and Studies
- Arts and Studies
- Entrepreneurial Engineer

Connection with research laboratories

The Civil Engineering and Urban Planning Department is connected to three research laboratories of INSA Lyon:
- The Civil and Environmental Engineering Laboratory (LGCIE EA 4126 )
- The Thermal Sciences Laboratory (CETHIL UMR 5008)
- The Environment, City and Society Laboratory (EVS UMR 5600)

Job opportunities

The diversity of the curricula gives the opportunity to work on construction sites, in technical centers or consulting companies, with local authorities, etc.
The diversity of knowledge and experiences of the engineers graduating from our department allows them to adapt to any changes in their professional career.
