Bouygues Telecom: deployment of the 4G network
INSA Lyon at the heart of new technologies favouring mobility
On Thursday 22 March 2012, INSA Lyon welcomed the operator Bouygues Telecom (the company that sponsored the 11th class in the Telecommunications, Services and Uses Department) for the launch of the 1st stage of the deployment of its fourth generation (4G) mobile telephony network.
The Bouygues Telecom team organised a demonstration of the new technology, also known as LTE (Long Term Evolution), on the campus of INSA Lyon, in the presence of three former INSA Lyon graduates, Olivier Roussat (General Manager of Bouygues Telecom), Eric Maurincomme (Director of INSA Lyon), Christian Nibourel (Chairman of the Board of INSA Lyon and Chairman of Accenture France-Benelux) as well as many journalists from specialised and national media organisations.
The participants could see the upload and download speeds of the LTE link and the latencies in real time, watch a live HD film recovered from the LTE link, test LTE smartphones, and connect to a 4G hot spot via WiFi. They were able to appreciate the impressive flow rates that give unparalleled access quality to multimedia content.
There is work ahead for the INSA Lyon graduate engineers to deploy and operate these 4G networks, to invent and offer new services and uses...
